Creativity: The Lifeblood of Successful Organizations

One of the opening sessions of the 2017 Cannes Lions Festival of Creativity -  The Economics of Creativity, presented by McKinsey & Company’s Jason Heller - set the bar high for our expectations of the rest of the week. This session was fruitful in getting the audience in the right mindset for the week, driving home the truth that marketing is not a nice-to-have; it is a business imperative.

Heller outlined his philosophy with four key business practices:

You must hardwire creativity into daily business practices.

Weaving creativity into management and board conversations is absolutely necessary to filter forward-thinking down through the rest of the organization. The most successful companies see marketing as an investment instead of an optional cost. Even during down cycles, you need to protect your marketing budget to avoid negative impact on the long-term business strategy. This must be hardwired into the lungs of the business to keep growth and momentum.

Be fanatical about your customers.

Get in the mind of you customer - and stay there. This is when data and analytics becomes incredibly important. Forget surveys and focus groups; closely monitor behaviors and real life consumption in a variety of ways. Properly analyzing genuine data will help you create an operational strategy to solve their unmet needs. This will also ensure your value proposition is varied enough to easily mesh into the minds of your different customer groups.

There is a need for speed to turn insight into action.

Customers are consuming faster than ever, and technology is transforming even faster to keep up. While there is a huge opportunity to solve today’s problems, it’s also necessary - in tandem - to continue developing your creativity muscles, the ones needed to stay agile & remain relevant in the future. Tracking, reporting, consistently communicating and staying abreast of trends are vital to creating a long-lasting and flexible strategy that continues to resonate and provide value. Take the desire to move your organization fast and actually do it.

Your idea must be adaptable, or you will eventually fail.

This is the scary truth. Your idea must be adaptable to early market signals, because the market changes faster than you can launch a new product. Creating teams with cross-functional autonomy will help you remain agile and make swift business decisions as your ideas and products evolve with the market.

Creativity is mandatory, not optional. Getting creative and resourceful with existing content is a good way to start. Looking forward to the rest of the event unfolding!

Best Videos Ever: Talking Heads & Silent Mannequins

Hey, boo. How are you feeling? You ok? November was a crazy month, huh? Don’t let the state of the union mess with your head though. We need to keep moving forward and focusing on progress. Plus, we have a new stupid photo meme - it’s kinda like planking in that you have to hold as still as possible, but you get far more posing options.

Hold It Now

As usual, Zach King does it so much cooler than anyone else. His Mannequin Challenge is wildly overachieving with at least 14 participants, a bunch of props and a sports theme. It also taps into the trend of a song inspiring (and being the soundtrack for) a meme - thank you, “Black Beatles” by Rae Sremmurd.

Historic Night, Don’t Worry About It

A bunch of mostly-white, privileged yuppies get together to watch the election night results. They just can’t believe that Trump could possibly win, you guys! This SNL skit NAILED the pervasive, liberal disbelief which Chris Rock and Dave Chappelle expertly skewer. And gave us some much needed LOLs the week after the election.

#UnitedStatesofWomen, Still Got It

But it wasn’t all bad. Where there’s progress, there’s hope. We have not have gotten our first woman president, but we did quadruple the number of women of color elected to the Senate! Check out 6 women who did shatter the glass ceiling on Election Night.

Online Dating = Kiss of Death

On Election Night, a friend of ours was on Bumble asking every guy on there who they voted for. If they said Trump, she responded "Time of Death; XXXX." As you can imagine, most of the dudes didn't have much of a sense of humor about it. They also thought it shouldn't get in the way of uhhh, "love" but she informed them that of course it did. We had to wonder how many peoples' dating lives were affected by the election results.

Get it, Baby Yonce

Convinced the baby in your womb can't hear you? Tell that to the mom who listened to Beyonce all the time while pregnant with her daughter, Kylie. Fast forward 5 years. While other kids her age were dressing up as Superman and The Joker, Kylie donned a full-blown Roberto Cavalli dress, one of the many outfits in Beyonce's "Lemonade", after declaring that's what she wanted to be. #SLAYYYYY

Best Videos Ever: Political Debate Edition

The televised debate tonight between presidential candidates Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton is pretty much all everyone is talking about. So we dug up some of the funniest videos either featuring or spoofing 2016’s nominees. The media already has scandal and outrage covered, so let’s do something different,; take a break and laugh along with (or at) them.

Does Anyone Really Look Good Between Two Ferns?

People either love or hate Zach Galifinakis’s deliberately obtuse and offensive comedy style. On his faux talk show, “Between Two Ferns,” he’s interviewed everyone from President Obama to Justin Bieber. Hillary has been criticized by some for not being as funny on the show as Obama was, but we think she did a pretty good job of not suffering the fool that is Zach G.

Besides, he refuses to even have Trump on his show...let’s let that sink in for a minute...a buffoonish comedian who says outlandish things for shock values refuses to bring on a guest known for the same. He claims it’s because he’s too “mentally challenged” and therefore would be taking advantage of him.

You Won’t Recognize Johnny Depp!

Earlier this year, Funnyordie put out a pseudo-documentary spoofing Donald Trump called “The Art of the Deal: The Movie.” Wearing the expected orange, floofy wig and enough rubber prosthetics to completely obscure his natural handsomeness, Johnny Depp transformed himself into the one some call “Cheeto Jesus.”

The movie trailer is currently being featured on Funnyordie and the entire movie is available to stream on Netflix - maybe you can watch it during commercials breaks while the debate is on. Drink whenever Trump says “deal.”

Straight Outta Options!!!

Finally, here’s something that sums up how many Americans feel about the elections this year. As a bonus it hearkens back to all the candidates everyone's probably already forgotten about:. What up, Carly Fiorina!!!

“Bernie is his name and ya’ll runnin’
Straight outta options
Is a brother that’ll cover your mother
And help the system to recover
Tax evading billionaires
And when the banks get caught
They get bailed”

Enjoy the debates tonight, America!

Best Videos Ever - Embarrassing Moments

We can admit it - we're not above laughing at the foibles or misfortunes of others. But sometimes one person's embarrassing is another person's "day in the life."

Hillary - Don't Feel Bad, Boo

That thing where you're a presidential candidate and you pass out at a 9/11 any normal, exhausted person would because it's crowded and humid and you're sick with pneumonia, and then people say you:

  • are actually a body double
  • are "losing it" cuz your campaign is losing
  • have Parkinson's disease

Sheesh, exaggerate much? Stumbling publicly while under such media scrutiny is embarrassing, sure, but let's not get too cray-cray about it. Everyone's allowed to have a sick day without it blowing up into a conspiracy theory.

Is There Anything About Tinder That's NOT Embarrassing?

That thing where you're riding the bus and you witness somebody swipe left on your Tinder photo. Ouch. Wish you could look away, BUT YOU CAN'T.

Millennials vs. Generation X: Not As Bad As You Think!

Usually, our teenage obsessions make us feel not just super old, but also embarrassed by our younger selves. When teens of today talk about our fave '90s Boy Bands: "These guys look 30" is so far the worst insult. "Denim on denim on denim" is a close second. Somehow none of this hurt Justin Timberlake's street cred though, and they actually LIKED some of the songs! Maybe we've still got it after all....

A Vine King's Back to School Prank

Don't you hate it when you wake up and knock over the giant poster board of your face in class? So embarrassing, Zach King.

If You've Never Been, You Couldn't Possibly Understand

Dude. There's nothing worse than trying to explain Burning Man to someone who doesn't get it, and never will. Don't be that loser who asks "What was it like? Was it hot?"

Best Videos Ever - End of Summer 2016

It’s time to wrap up another summer of festivals, hit singles, blockbuster movies, street fashion, and pop culture phenomenons. We’re sad it’s over, but excited to see what new craziness hits as we zoom through fall and onward to 2017.

Best Summer Banger

It’s not summer without a dope soundtrack to go with the long, hot days and nights. There’s always that one song (or songs) that are played everywhere non-stop, that simultaneously manage to capture that carefree summer feeling and get linked to all your best memories of the season. So here's a video for one of Summer 2016’s Biggest Bangers.

This is the improbably Portland-based rap group Amine and their song “Caroline.”  We like that it avoids so many of those summer hip-hop video cliches (the beach, bikini dance parties, drinks on the beach, golf carts by the beach, swimming pools), and instead has more of a real urban feel with fast food drive-in runs, cruising in your car with your homies singing along to tunes, and playing Xbox at the crib. Bonus that the song and video also make us think of Outkast’s “Roses” (the muse of that song is also named Caroline) and how it was part of the soundtrack for Summer 2004.

Augmented Reality

Bjork hasn’t been in the news for awhile, but she’s long been known for pushing the envelope artistically (swan dress, anyone?). To drive attention to her latest album release, she used 3D virtual reality to present it at a press conference in London and answer questions virtually while her body was at home in Iceland. Nice touch making yourself look like an exotic alien superheroine, Bjork!

Pokemon Go A-Go-Go

This virtual reality-based mobile game sparked controversy and media hype after it hit 21 million daily active users (FAR exceeding Candy Crush’s’ peak DAU of 9.3mil), making it the biggest mobile game in history. But there has been a fair amount of bad press about the game too, mainly that it has caused some people to become victims of crime or accidents. For one thing, the game doesn’t distinguish between safe and unsafe neighborhoods when it’s leading you to that elusive Nidoqueen or your next battle. Or alert you that you’re about to walk right into traffic because you’re so distracted by hunting Pokemon’s on your phone.

Hence, this parody video. It’s definitely good for some laughs at the expense of Pokemon obsessives.

Gucci Mane Got #EverybodyLicking

How do you get positive press attention for your new album right after being released from prison? In the hip-hop world, this isn’t necessarily a problem, and notorious characters like Gucci Mane do well by taking advantage of said notoriety. But we like that Gucci Mane did it with humility - in a self-deprecating nod to the much-ridiculed ice cream cone tattoo on his face, he partnered with Spotify to do an ice cream truck takeover in NYC. He wrapped the trucks with his album title "Everyboyd Looking," a blown-up representation of the cone tattoo, and the hashtag #EverybodyLicking. Fans lined up in droves and shot videos and photos they they then shared on their Instagram and Twitter accounts = the best press is free press.

Best Videos Ever: Women's Stories Edition

Female voices can be so powerful if you let them. In the last few months, it feels as though millions of women's stories have suddenly burst forward, bringing issues like rape culture, the wage gap and body shame to the forefront of the conversation in a big way. As female founders, it feels damn good to finally feel like we have the opportunity to hear and be heard.

Since last week was Women's Equality Day, we wanted to take this moment and thank all of the amazing women - in real life and the interwebs! - who have inspired us, befriended us, guided us, made us laugh hysterically and led us to the rightest & brightest path, even when we - as ballsy women often do - strayed millions of miles away from it.

Watch, learn, laugh, love & get inspired #AF.

In the #News: Do Women Have the Right to Wear the Burkini?

From body shame to burkini blitz, where does the war on women's bodies end? On August 5th, the mayor of Villeneuve-Loubet, France banned swimmers from wearing clothes that showed an "obvious religious affiliation", an initiative aimed directly at Muslim women who regularly wear full-body swimsuits, many of whom were escorted off the beach by officers. This quick clip will walk you through the horrific story in less than 30s.

"Equality, duh. Because literally, duh." Couldn't have said it better ourselves. In this video, feel connected to Michelle Obama, Meryl Streep, Kerry Washington, Tina Fey & other extraordinary women. Use their stories to know that one day, we will run our own empires. And be paid the same as men for the same jobs. And be able to CHOOSE when we say yes and when we say no. Duh.

Who Run The World? #GIRLS

Less than a 100 years ago, women in the US couldn't vote. Today, we're close to having more women in office than ever before. That is incredible. Dying to see what happens when every girl in the world finds her inner Beyonce and takes over? So. Are. We. Beyonce background music got me watching this video on repeat.

While this vertical-snap-posted-to-FB may not have been shot by a video crew, "Fuck off" captured exactly how we felt when we saw this non-Olympian  crushing the elliptical. With 71K shares, and a completion rate 9x higher than it's horizontal counterpart, looks like vertical video is a worthwhile strategy to experiment with on FB.
